Tornado Devastates Pomas: 39 Injured, 300 Homes Damaged

Tornado Devastates Pomas: 39 Injured, 300 Homes Damaged

A powerful tornado ripped through the village of Pomas in southern France on Monday, leaving a trail of destruction that injured 39 people and damaged approximately 300 homes. Authorities reported Tuesday morning that two of the injured remain in critical condition, with 17 individuals hospitalized following the rare weather event.

Scale of the Disaster

The tornado struck the commune of Pomas, located in the Aude department, at approximately 5:20 p.m. local time on August 24. The village, home to roughly 1,000 residents, saw more than two-thirds of its area affected by the storm’s force, according to Emmanuelle Plantier-Lemarchand, sub-prefect of Carcassonne and secretary general of the Aude prefecture.

“Practically more than two-thirds of the commune suffered the blast of the storm,” Plantier-Lemarchand stated on franceinfo. Emergency crews have already inspected over 200 homes, with some requiring immediate evacuation and securing of residents due to structural instability.

Ongoing Rescue and Recovery Efforts

Seventy-five firefighters remained on site Tuesday, down from the more than 120 deployed Monday evening. Throughout the night, rescue operations continued, with specialized teams conducting reconnaissance and verification missions across the affected areas.

An audit of damaged buildings is underway to assess structural weaknesses and evaluate collapse risks. Meanwhile, gendarmerie forces are securing the zone and its surroundings to prevent looting and ensure public safety.

Infrastructure and Utilities Impacted

The tornado caused extensive damage to roofs, vehicles, and entire structures. Photographs from the scene show overturned trucks, collapsed houses, and debris scattered across streets. Several roads remained closed to traffic Tuesday morning, complicating access for emergency services.

Around 1,400 households were still without electricity in the area as of early Tuesday, according to the prefecture. Teams are working to restore power and clear blocked routes, but the scale of destruction suggests a prolonged recovery period.

Shelter and Support for Victims

Two emergency shelters have been opened for displaced residents: one at the Pomas community hall and another in the nearby town of Limoux. Many families have also been relocated to stay with relatives or in neighboring communes while their homes are assessed and repaired.

Temporary roofing operations are underway to protect damaged houses from further weather exposure. The prefecture confirmed that rehousing efforts are being coordinated with local authorities to address both immediate and long-term needs.

Eyewitness Accounts and Social Media Footage

Videos shared widely on social media captured the terrifying funnel cloud as it moved across the region. One clip shows the tornado’s massive vortex churning near Carcassonne, accompanied by hailstones measuring up to five centimeters in diameter. Another video, posted by a local resident, documents the aftermath with the caption: “After the fire… the tornado.”

The rare meteorological event has drawn comparisons to other extreme weather incidents in the region, which has faced both wildfires and severe storms in recent years. Climate scientists note that while tornadoes are uncommon in southern France, changing weather patterns may increase the frequency of such violent phenomena.

Next Steps for the Community

Local and regional authorities are expected to conduct a full damage assessment in the coming days. The French government has not yet announced whether a state of natural disaster will be declared, a designation that would unlock additional funding for reconstruction.

For now, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of residents, restoring essential services, and beginning the long process of rebuilding a community shattered by nature’s fury.
