UN Condemns PIMS Fire That Killed 14 Newborns

The United Nations has expressed profound sorrow and extended condolences following the tragic death of 14 newborn babies in a fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) hospital in Islamabad. The incident has drawn international attention, with multiple global bodies and foreign governments voicing solidarity with Pakistan.

UN Offers Assistance and Sympathy

Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, issued a statement conveying the organization’s deepest sympathies to the parents of the deceased children. He described the loss as an unimaginable tragedy for any parent.

“The death of newborn babies is an unimaginable tragedy for parents. The UN is ready to provide all possible assistance to the Pakistani government,” Dujarric said.

Saudi Arabia and UNICEF Join Condolences

Saudi Arabia also expressed sorrow over the PIMS hospital tragedy. In an official statement, the Saudi Foreign Ministry said it stands in solidarity with the government and people of Pakistan during this difficult time.

Earlier, UNICEF issued a separate statement mourning the loss of at least 14 newborn lives. The organization extended its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and all those affected by the devastating incident.

Call for Urgent Safety Reforms

UNICEF used the tragedy to highlight broader concerns about healthcare facility safety. The agency emphasized that every newborn deserves a safe start to life and that every mother and child should be able to receive care in a secure health facility.

“UNICEF calls for the urgent review and strengthening of fire prevention and safety standards across health facilities, to ensure that every mother and child can receive the care they need in a safe environment,” the statement read.

The fire at PIMS hospital has reignited debates about infrastructure safety and emergency preparedness in Pakistan’s public healthcare system. Authorities are expected to launch a full investigation into the cause of the blaze and the adequacy of existing fire safety protocols.
