MUZAFFARABAD – In his first major policy announcement since taking office, newly elected Azad Jammu and Kashmir Prime Minister Barrister Iftikhar Ali Gillani has committed to restoring internet services and reopening all entry and exit routes within the next two days.
Speaking to journalists during his inaugural visit to the Central Press Club, Gillani confirmed that both internal and external routes of Azad Kashmir would be fully operational within 48 hours. The move addresses weeks of disruption that have hampered travel and communication across the region.
Phased Internet Restoration Prioritizes Education
The prime minister outlined a phased approach to reconnecting the region, with educational institutions receiving priority access in the first phase. Internet connectivity for schools, colleges, and universities is expected to be restored within the same two-day window, signaling a rapid response to growing concerns from students and academic staff.
“All internal and external routes of Azad Kashmir will be reopened within two days,” Gillani stated. “Internet services will also be restored in phases, with educational institutions being prioritised in the first phase.”
Governance and Public Grievances Top Agenda
Beyond infrastructure restoration, Gillani emphasized that the Kashmir freedom movement and good governance would remain central pillars of his administration. He pledged to address public grievances and streamline administrative affairs across Azad Kashmir, signaling a broader reform agenda.
The announcement comes as the PML-N leader works to consolidate support following a closely watched leadership transition. Earlier this week, Gillani visited senior party figure Shah Ghulam Qadir in an effort to ease internal tensions and unify the party ranks.
Rapid Mandate for the 17th Prime Minister
Barrister Iftikhar Gillani was elected the 17th prime minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir just two days ago, securing 30 votes in the AJK Legislative Assembly. His swift move to restore connectivity reflects an urgent effort to normalize daily life and demonstrate effective governance from day one.
The restoration of internet services and transport routes is expected to provide immediate relief to residents, businesses, and students who have faced significant disruption in recent weeks.
