Speaking on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, Pezeshkian’s remarks came as renewed fighting flared over the weekend and US President Donald Trump warned Washington would hit Iran “hard.” The comments, reported by Reuters citing Iran’s ISNA news agency, underscore Tehran’s conditional willingness to de-escalate despite the collapse of a preliminary June accord and subsequent disputes over the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
War Enters Sixth Month with Hormuz at Crisis Center
The conflict, which began with coordinated US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, has now entered its sixth month. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in the initial attacks, with his son Mojtaba succeeding him in March. A two-week ceasefire on April 8 led to face-to-face US-Iran talks in Pakistan later that month, but the preliminary agreement reached in June unraveled amid renewed hostilities and a standoff over the Strait of Hormuz, the world’s most critical oil chokepoint.
Ship-tracking data from Kpler showed commodity vessel transits through the strait remained in single digits on Monday, hovering around five vessels compared to a ten-day average of fourteen. No liquid tankers were among those traversing the waterway, signaling the near-closure of a route that normally handles a fifth of global oil consumption.
Diplomatic Efforts Stall as Economic Warfare Intensifies
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas acknowledged that diplomatic efforts over the strait have “failed to achieve a breakthrough,” while Qatar urged both sides to return to negotiations after renewed tit-for-tat attacks. “Leaving the issue unresolved and trying to normalise the closure of the Strait would lead to escalation,” Qatari foreign ministry spokesman Majed Al Ansari warned.
Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent signaled an escalation in economic pressure, stating that Washington is “probably going to announce a bank sanction this week, and we will announce one the week after.” Iran’s Central Bank Governor Abdolnaser Hemmati pushed back, asserting Tehran has sufficient foreign currency reserves and was ready to inject up to $2 billion into the foreign exchange market to calm volatility.

The human toll of the broader regional instability was also evident in Gaza, where Israeli forces killed at least four people, including three children, according to health officials. The USS Abraham Lincoln, an aircraft carrier at the center of controversy over crew conditions, made its first port call in 280 days in Thailand on Tuesday, highlighting the operational strain of the prolonged deployment.
Regional Diplomacy and Military Posturing
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called for implementation of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, terming it the “most viable and enduring pathway to lasting peace in the region” during his address to the SCO summit. Iran’s military vowed that “any aggression against Iran will not be tolerated on any grounds,” while Pezeshkian thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for Moscow’s position on the war, stating that together Tehran and Moscow can resist US “unilateralism.” The Iranian foreign ministry also challenged Europe, asserting that “Europe can no longer speak of ‘strategic autonomy’ while merely executing Washington’s orders.”
