Paris Concorde Area to Face Major Traffic Disruptions in September

NMAdmin September 1, 2026 1 3 min read

Motorists who regularly travel through the area surrounding the Place de la Concorde should brace for a month of significant traffic disruptions. What begins as minor inconvenience will escalate into a full-scale closure of one of Paris’s most iconic squares by the end of September.

The primary catalyst for the disruption is a rare papal mass to be celebrated by Pope Leo XIV on the Place de la Concorde and the Champs-Élysées on Saturday, September 26. The immense logistical preparation required for such an event has triggered an early start to the security and infrastructure lockdown.

Initial Closures Begin September 2

According to an announcement from the Paris police prefecture, the first phase of restrictions will commence on Wednesday, September 2 at 10:00 PM. At that time, the central island of the Place de la Concorde will be neutralized to allow for the construction of the structures needed for the mass.

During this initial phase, crossing the square from south to north by car will be strictly forbidden. Drivers are advised to use the Quai des Tuileries as an alternative route. However, crossings to the north and west will remain accessible for the time being via the western side lane.

Escalating Restrictions and Full Closure

The disruptions are expected to intensify significantly as the month progresses. The town hall of the 8th arrondissement has warned residents and commuters that the event “will lead to a progressive, then total, closure of the Place de la Concorde and its surroundings.” While a precise schedule has not yet been released, authorities anticipate a complete lockdown of the sector in the days leading up to the mass.

Adding to the logistical complexity, the square will also host the International Gastronomy Village from September 10 to 13. The festival attracted 55,000 visitors last year, and its presence will further strain access to the area during an already challenging period for traffic.

A Month of High-Profile Events

Pope Leo XIV’s visit to France at the end of September includes stops in Paris, Lourdes, and Metz. For the Parisian mass, more than 400,000 people have already registered to attend, according to Bishop Benoît Bertrand, president of the organizing committee for the apostolic journey.

The day before the mass on the Concorde, the Pope is scheduled to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron, visit UNESCO headquarters, and then travel to Notre-Dame Cathedral. Following the mass, a large prayer vigil for young people aged 17 to 35 will be held at the Stade de France. The diocese of Paris reported that all 80,000 free tickets for the stadium event were claimed within a single hour.
