As concerns mount over a potential direct confrontation with Russia, the French military is stepping up security at its most strategic installations. Next month, the French Navy will test a new aerial surveillance system over the Toulon naval base, the largest military port in Europe and home to France’s nuclear attack submarines.
According to Nice-Matin, confirming an earlier report by Le Marin, a tethered balloon will be deployed for several days above the base in the Var department. The system is designed to detect approaching drones, whether they are civilian models flown by curious tourists or more hostile unmanned aircraft.
A Growing Drone Threat to Sensitive Sites
In recent years, as drone technology has advanced rapidly, French authorities have grown increasingly concerned about the threat posed by spy drones and weaponized unmanned aerial vehicles capable of carrying out stealthy attacks on sensitive military infrastructure.
The maritime prefecture for the Mediterranean confirmed the dirigible would be used specifically to detect drones approaching the base. Toulon serves as the home port for France’s nuclear attack submarines and will eventually host the France Libre, the next-generation aircraft carrier slated to replace the Charles de Gaulle.
Testing Advanced Aerostat Technology
This is not the first time the French Navy has experimented with tethered balloons. In March 2025, a similar system was tested during the “Dragoon Fury” exercise from an amphibious helicopter carrier off the coast of Toulon.
The upcoming test will use a model designed by A-NSE (Aéro-Nautic Services & Engineering), a company based in La Ciotat. Their aerostat can carry up to 300 kilograms of payload—including cameras, jammers, and radar systems—to an altitude of 1,500 meters and remain aloft for up to 40 days.
Toulon’s Strategic Importance
The Toulon naval base is a critical component of France’s maritime defense infrastructure. The port is currently completing construction of new docks to accommodate the new nuclear attack submarines, and similar work is planned for the next-generation aircraft carrier.
The base’s economic impact extends throughout the Toulon region, with the port and city evolving together as military requirements drive infrastructure development and local employment.
The upcoming blimp test represents a significant step in France’s efforts to modernize its defense capabilities against emerging aerial threats, particularly as European nations reassess their security posture amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
