Donald Trump Jr’s extravagant Bahamas wedding was partially financed by Umar Kremlev, a Russian oligarch with close ties to Vladimir Putin, according to an investigation by ProPublica published Monday, September 14.
The May 24 celebration featured private islands, a five-tier cake flown in from Florida, and a lavish fireworks display. While Trump Jr’s personal fortune—estimated at $300 million by Forbes—could easily cover such expenses, the investigation reveals that Kremlev quietly covered hundreds of thousands of dollars in wedding costs.
A Secret Benefactor Emerges
According to ProPublica, Kremlev financed several key elements of the celebration, including:
- Rental of a private island in the Bahamas
- Accommodation for guests
- A $70,000 fireworks display
His team also assisted with event organization. The generous contribution allowed Kremlev to join the roughly fifty carefully selected guests, while some longtime friends of Trump Jr reportedly were not invited.
“It was really very intimate, just very close friends,” Trump Jr later said on his podcast. Notably, President Donald Trump did not attend the wedding, telling reporters days before: “I told my son it wasn’t the right time for me. I have something called Iran and other things.”
From Criminal Past to Boxing Federation Chief
Before becoming an influential oligarch, Kremlev worked to erase his past throughout the 2010s. He changed his name, converted to Orthodox Christianity, and sought to distance himself from criminal convictions, including for extortion, as he integrated into Moscow’s power networks.
Since 2020, he has led the International Boxing Association (IBA), a sports organization comparable to FIFA but dedicated to boxing. Shortly after his arrival, the IBA began receiving funding from Russian energy giant Gazprom. According to ProPublica, the wedding payments originated from an IBA-affiliated entity based in Dubai.
The International Olympic Committee stripped the IBA of its role organizing Olympic boxing due to transparency concerns and governance issues—a significant setback for Kremlev that may explain his interest in cultivating closer ties with American power circles. In late September 2025, Trump Jr attended an IBA business forum in Istanbul alongside his “friend.”
Political Agenda Under Scrutiny
A spokesperson for Trump Jr stated that the two men met several years ago through a mutual friend in hunting circles, describing Kremlev as “a personal friend of Don” with no shared business interests. Kremlev’s press service insisted he “has never discussed political topics with any of his American friends and acquaintances.”
However, the evidence suggests otherwise. In the days before Trump Jr’s wedding, Kremlev was reportedly in China as part of the delegation accompanying Putin, according to Chinese state media—a claim his press service denies. The previous month, Putin had awarded him the Order of Friendship.
The 43-year-old Russian is also deeply involved in an organization called Healthy Fatherland, which promotes healthy eating and youth sports. The group is under Ukrainian sanctions for its alleged role in a program involving the abduction of Ukrainian children from occupied territories and their relocation under the guise of “rehabilitation.” The Ukrainian government has also imposed personal sanctions on Kremlev, citing his proximity to Putin and Russian security services.
A Problematic Gift
While Trump Jr holds no official position in the administration, the man who leads the Trump Organization reportedly played an active role in selecting cabinet members for Trump’s second term. Having his wedding financed by a Putin associate while his father navigates the Russia-Ukraine conflict—including attempts to mediate between the two countries—represents an obvious misstep.
Following ProPublica’s publication, Trump Jr and Bettina Trump did not deny the report, instead confirming Kremlev’s role: “It was a wedding gift of extraordinary generosity from a friend, and we are infinitely grateful to him,” they said in a statement posted on Bettina’s Instagram account.
“It is regrettable that such a personal and joyful moment could be perceived as political, or even sinister, simply because of a person’s identity or origin,” they added.
Whether naivety or complete disconnect, the revelation has cast a shadow over what was meant to be a private celebration—raising uncomfortable questions as the White House continues its delicate diplomatic dance over Ukraine.
