High-Protein Diets: Health Benefits and Hidden Risks

High-Protein Diets: Health Benefits and Hidden Risks

The supermarket shelves are increasingly crowded with protein-packed products—whey shakers for post-workout recovery, protein-enriched yogurts for breakfast, and protein bars for snacking. This surge reflects a broader cultural obsession with protein consumption, fueled by marketing strategies from the food industry and amplified by social media trends.

While proteins are undeniably essential for human health, the question arises: are we consuming too much? And what are the consequences for our bodies?

The Essential Role of Proteins

Proteins, along with carbohydrates and fats, form one of the three major macronutrient families vital to our well-being. Composed of chains of 20 amino acids—nine of which our bodies cannot produce and must be obtained through diet—proteins serve far more than just muscle development.

According to the French National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety (ANSES), proteins fulfill a broad structural function. They contribute to the renewal of muscle tissue and are integral components of skin, bones, hair, and nails. Beyond their structural role, proteins participate in numerous physiological processes, including immune system function, oxygen transport from lungs to organs, and hormone production.

Diversifying Protein Sources

Nutrition experts emphasize the importance of consuming proteins from both animal sources—meat, fish, eggs, dairy—and plant sources such as cereals, legumes (chickpeas, lentils, beans), and oilseeds like peanuts and almonds.

However, animal and plant proteins differ significantly. According to the French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment (INRAE), animal proteins contain all essential amino acids, while plant proteins are typically low in certain essential amino acids that the body cannot synthesize.

To address this, alternating between plant and animal protein sources is recommended. For vegetarians, combining cereals and legumes in the same meal—such as semolina with chickpeas or lentils with rice—can provide all essential amino acids needed for protein synthesis.

Daily Protein Requirements

Since 2007, ANSES has established that healthy adults need approximately 0.83 to 1 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight daily. For instance, a sedentary 65-kilogram woman should consume between 54 and 60 grams of protein per day, while an 80-kilogram man should aim for 66 to 80 grams.

These recommendations vary based on individual circumstances. Children, pregnant or breastfeeding women, seniors, and highly active individuals have different needs. Athletes, for example, generally require between 1.2 and 2.2 grams per kilogram per day, depending on their sport, profile, and goals.

The Dangers of Excessive Protein Consumption

Despite the fitness industry’s emphasis on high-protein diets, nutritionists warn against overconsumption. Dietitian-nutritionist Julien Todeschini explains that beyond a certain threshold, the body cannot assimilate additional proteins and eliminates them through urine and feces.

Protein supplements, while potentially useful for athletes supplementing their intake, are unnecessary for those already consuming adequate protein through solid foods. As sports dietitian Violette Duval emphasizes, protein supplements complement—but do not replace—a balanced diet.

Warning Signs of Protein Excess

Specialists consistently caution that excessive protein intake can trigger adverse effects. Proteins are large molecules that kidneys struggle to filter. The body eliminates them, but this process generates significant waste products, particularly from animal proteins, which can acidify the body.

  • Digestive difficulties including bloating and constipation
  • Chronic dehydration
  • Bad breath
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Weight gain

More concerning, a 2024 University of Pittsburgh study published in Nature found that a diet containing 20% additional protein promoted plaque accumulation in arteries, reducing blood circulation and increasing stroke and heart attack risk.

While the impact on kidneys is real, recent research suggests that individuals already suffering from chronic kidney disease are most vulnerable, with limited effects observed in healthy individuals.

Striking the Right Balance

To ensure proteins remain allies to our health, experts recommend diversifying protein sources, distributing consumption throughout the day, and adhering to recommended daily allowances. The key lies not in elimination but in moderation and variety—ensuring our bodies receive the nutrients they need without overwhelming our systems.
