With just six weeks remaining before the midterm elections, President Donald Trump’s approval rating has reached its lowest point, according to a CNN poll released Wednesday. Only one-third of Americans (33%) believe the president is doing a good job, while a mere 13% rate his performance as “very good.”
Economic Concerns Dominate Voter Priorities
The economy has emerged as the central issue crystallizing voter discontent. Just 27% of Americans approve of Trump’s economic policies—a dramatic 22-point decline compared to 2018, the last midterm elections during his presidency. Perhaps more tellingly, only 28% of respondents believe the national economy is performing well, down from 69% six years ago, representing a staggering 41-point drop.
The economy carries particular weight for voters this cycle, with two-thirds describing it as an “extremely important” issue—a figure notably higher than in the two previous midterm elections. In a significant blow to the president, Americans now express greater confidence in Democrats than Republicans to handle economic matters.
Voters Signal Opposition to Trump’s Agenda
The poll suggests these midterms may serve as a referendum on the first half of Trump’s term. Among registered voters, 44% say their vote will represent opposition to his presidency, compared to only 19% who intend to cast their ballot in support. This dynamic poses particular challenges for a president who previously urged supporters at rallies to vote Republican as if his name appeared on the ballot.
Beyond the difficult economic climate—with inflation reaching 3.40% in August—voters appear frustrated by what they perceive as the governing party’s casual approach to pressing concerns, particularly purchasing power and fuel prices.
Democratic Momentum Builds
The survey offers encouraging signs for Democrats. Between 41% and 49% of voters indicate they would support a Democratic candidate over a Republican. Numerous candidates have attempted to distance themselves from Trump’s image in hopes of attracting broader support. However, many voters remain skeptical about the prospect of Democrats controlling Congress.
Beyond economic issues, voters heading to the polls on November 3 cite integrity, respect for electoral rules, and healthcare as significant concerns shaping their voting decisions.
