TotalEnergies Boosts Dividends as French Drivers Grapple With Soaring Fuel Costs

TotalEnergies Boosts Dividends as French Drivers Grapple With Soaring Fuel Costs

French energy giant TotalEnergies announced Monday that its board of directors approved a dividend policy targeting annual increases of more than 5% for fiscal years 2026 through 2030, a move likely to spark controversy as consumers across France struggle with rising fuel prices.

The announcement came during the company’s investor day, where the oil and gas major also outlined ambitious production growth targets and projected significant increases in free cash flow.

Record Profits Fuel Generous Shareholder Returns

In the second quarter of this year, the French group doubled its net profit compared to the same period last year, posting $5.4 billion in earnings. The results were boosted by elevated hydrocarbon prices linked to ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The company confirmed its objective of achieving average production growth exceeding 3% annually through 2030, with total energy output—including oil, gas, and electricity—expected to climb 4% per year until the end of the decade.

Production Expansion Plans

TotalEnergies outlined its long-term production strategy:

  • Oil and gas production growth of 2-3% annually during 2030-2035
  • Electricity generation growth exceeding 20% per year on average
  • Electricity to represent approximately 20% of the company’s energy mix by 2030
  • Electricity targeted to reach 25% of energy mix by 2035
  • Net investments between $14-17 billion annually during 2027-2032

The group stated it has “very good visibility” on its energy production growth capacity beyond 2030, citing its exploration capabilities and access to already-discovered resources.

Financial Projections

TotalEnergies estimates that this production growth will translate into a substantial increase in free cash flow of approximately $10 billion between 2025 and 2030, assuming comparable price environments—equivalent to an increase of more than $4 per share.

The company’s announcement comes amid mounting pressure on oil companies across Europe. Six European countries, led by Germany, have called for a tax on oil companies—a measure French Economy Minister Roland Lescure has indicated he does not support.

The timing of the dividend announcement is particularly sensitive, as French consumers face significantly higher fuel costs, with prices notably lower in neighboring Spain, prompting questions about pricing disparities within the European market.
