After an unseasonably warm start to October, France is set to experience a sharp and sudden transition into autumn weather, with temperatures forecast to plummet by as much as 15°C within a matter of days.
A Final Taste of Summer
This Monday, October 5, the weather across much of the country remains decidedly summer-like. The sun is shining over most of the country, and afternoon highs are expected to reach between 22°C and 28°C — well above seasonal norms.
Meteorologist Guillaume Séchet summarized the situation on X, noting that “aside from the stormy instability responsible for occasionally torrential rain in the Languedoc-Roussillon region, France continues to experience near-summer conditions, with exceptionally high temperatures for the season.”
However, this warm spell is not expected to last. According to Séchet, everything should change starting Wednesday, when the country will experience a “brutal shift toward autumn.”
A Drastic Drop in Temperatures
La Chaîne Météo is also warning of a “drastic” drop in temperatures. A telling sign of this change: forecasts indicate the mercury will fall below seasonal averages for at least two consecutive days — Thursday and Friday. Snow could even fall in some resorts of the northern Alps during the night of Thursday into Friday.
This abrupt weather shift is being driven by the collapse of an anticyclone, which will give way to unsettled conditions. As early as Wednesday, rain is expected across the entire country. Due to a still-particularly warm air mass, thunderstorms could break out in certain areas, especially around the Mediterranean basin, raising fears of renewed flooding.
The rain will then move eastward on Thursday, accompanied by cool temperatures, with afternoon highs of just 15°C to 19°C. Similar levels are expected through the weekend, though conditions will be mixed: rain and sunny spells across the northern half of the country, and clear, sunny skies in the south.
Uncertain Outlook Ahead
According to Guillaume Séchet, “the evolution for the following week remains uncertain.” An anticyclone could regain control and bring milder conditions back — but other scenarios point instead to “increasingly autumnal and unsettled weather.”
For now, the message is clear: it is time to bring out the jackets and coats once again.
