A criminal investigation led by the prosecutor’s office in Béthune, in the Pas-de-Calais department of northern France, has resulted in the dismantling of what authorities describe as a “network of violent pimps” operating across the towns of Lens and Douai.
Eight individuals have been implicated in the exploitation and extortion of prostitutes and, in some cases, their clients, according to the Béthune prosecutor’s office.
Sixteen Victims Identified
Investigators identified no fewer than 16 victims of the network, most of them prostitutes, including one girl who was only 13 years old. According to the prosecutor’s office, the suspects also targeted their clients.
Prostitutes were beaten and subjected to racketeering, while clients were extorted of money under threat, according to reporting by France 3.
Ten Arrested, Including a 16-Year-Old Minor
The police operation led to the arrest of ten individuals, eight of whom were brought before the Béthune prosecutor’s office.
- A 16-year-old minor has been placed in a closed educational center pending trial before a juvenile court judge.
- Four adults have been indicted and imprisoned. They are scheduled to appear before the Béthune criminal court on November 19 and face up to ten years in prison and a fine of 150,000 euros, according to the prosecutor’s office.
- The three remaining defendants were processed through a prior admission of guilt procedure (CRPC), commonly known as a “guilty plea.” One received a sentence of ten months of firm imprisonment, while the other two received 14-month suspended sentences.
Pattern of Violence and Extortion
The case highlights a disturbing pattern in which criminal networks prey not only on vulnerable individuals forced into prostitution but also on those who seek their services. The combination of physical violence, racketeering, and threats of extortion created an environment of fear that kept victims from coming forward, investigators said.
The dismantling of the network marks a significant operation for law enforcement in the region, which has seen similar cases of exploitation in recent years.
