Netflix and Shondaland have announced that a new limited series set in the Bridgerton universe is in development, this time turning the spotlight on the family’s matriarch, Violet Bridgerton.
The untitled project will chronicle the romance between a young Violet and Viscount Edmund Bridgerton, offering viewers a long-awaited glimpse into the love story that shaped the sprawling Regency-era family at the heart of the franchise.
A Story Decades in the Making
The announcement, made via Instagram on Thursday, signalled a significant expansion of the Bridgerton television universe. “The time has come for us to turn our attention to the Matriarch of our beloved Bridgertons,” the post read, adding that the new series would follow “the romance of a young Violet and Viscount Edmund Bridgerton.”
Violet Bridgerton has been portrayed by English actress Ruth Gemmell across the first four seasons of the hit Netflix series, where she appears as the widowed mother guiding her eight children through the marriage market of early 19th-century London.
Shondaland Veterans at the Helm
Shonda Rhimes, the powerhouse producer behind Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal, will serve as showrunner, writer and executive producer on the new series alongside Nicholas Nardini, a producer on the previous Bridgerton spin-off, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.
The limited series marks the second spin-off to emerge from the Bridgerton franchise, following the success of Queen Charlotte, which debuted in 2023 and explored the origins of the monarch’s marriage to King George III.
Bridgerton’s Expanding Empire
The Regency-era romance franchise is based on the bestselling Bridgerton books by Julia Quinn, with each instalment focusing on a different sibling’s path to love. The series became a global phenomenon upon its debut in 2020, earning widespread praise for its diverse casting and lavish production design.
Meanwhile, the flagship show continues to move forward. Season 5 of Bridgerton is currently in production in London and will centre on Francesca Bridgerton, played by Hannah Dodd, and Michaela Stirling, portrayed by Masali Baduza.
Further details on the young Violet spin-off, including casting and a premiere date, have yet to be announced.
