A South African rugby player from the Lions of Johannesburg was found dead in a hotel shower on Île de Ré on Friday morning, casting uncertainty over his team’s Champions Cup match against La Rochelle scheduled for Saturday.
Player Discovered in Cardio-Respiratory Arrest
The player was found in a shower cubicle locked from the inside at a hotel in Sainte-Marie-de-Ré, according to reports. He was discovered in cardio-respiratory arrest. The player’s identity has not been released because his family has not yet been notified.
Arnaud Laraize, the public prosecutor in La Rochelle, confirmed to AFP that an investigation into the causes of death has been opened, adding that the hypothesis of an accidental death was being prioritized. An autopsy is expected to be conducted, according to a source close to the case.
Psychological Support Offered
A psychological support unit has been established at the hotel for both staff and the Lions team, according to ICI.
The sudden death has raised questions about whether Saturday’s match, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. local time for the opening day of the Champions Cup, will proceed. The competition brings together the top clubs from Europe and South Africa.
It is the only match for which organizers had not released team lineups on Friday, as is customary the day before fixtures.
Parallels to 2015 Munster Tragedy
The circumstances evoke a similar tragedy from exactly ten years ago, when the death of Munster coach Anthony Foley in the Île-de-France region the day before a match against Racing 92 led to the postponement of that fixture at the request of the Irish province.
