The Spoon Revolution: Why a Growing Community Is Ditching the Fork

The Spoon Revolution: Why a Growing Community Is Ditching the Fork

Forget the knife-and-fork duet. A quiet but determined movement is challenging the default cutlery hierarchy, arguing that the spoon—not the fork—deserves the place of honor at the dinner table. On social media, content creators can increasingly be seen enjoying meals with the rounded utensil, and on platforms like Reddit, users have openly declared: “Forks are useless.”

While this preference may seem trivial, it runs deeper than table manners. For many, the spoon represents practicality, sensory comfort, and even a small act of rebellion against social convention.

Practicality on the Plate

For Bruno, 62, the spoon is simply the smarter choice. “I prefer eating with a spoon because I’m a food lover,” he says. “With saucy dishes, I don’t leave a single drop on my plate. It’s better than mopping up with bread—you get more out of it.”

At restaurants, he has a playful routine: “I ask for a spoon and say, ‘I’ve stayed a bit of a child,’ which makes the waiter smile.” Among his family, his habit is well known. “We apologize gently when someone forgets to give me a spoon!”

Julie, 44, takes her preference further. “I can plan certain dishes specifically because they’re so cool to eat with a spoon: a dahl, rice with little bits on the side, small pasta shells,” she says. “I obviously have my favorites. The one I love most is a jam spoon—a small spoon with a long handle.”

Loup, who follows a mostly vegetarian diet, notes: “There are very few occasions where I take a fork. With a spoon, you get a bit of everything, whereas with a fork, plenty of things slip through. It’s a bit stupid, isn’t it?” The question lingers: “Apart from meat, what’s the point?”

Sensory Comfort and Neurodivergence

For Alice, 36, the spoon offers more than convenience. “I find it a thousand times more practical. At least nothing falls, especially when I’m eating small mixed things.” But there’s another layer: “There’s also a psychological aspect linked to my neurodivergence.” Living with attention deficit disorder, she explains, “I can focus more easily on the conversation with the person I’m sharing a meal with, rather than having to watch my food on the fork to make sure it doesn’t fall!”

Research supports this. A study published earlier this year by British researchers highlighted the “important role” cutlery plays in the dining experience of autistic individuals with eating disorders.

Loup, who lives with ADHD, “can’t stand the sound of a fork against the plate.” “Some people around me don’t grasp the discomfort it causes me, and it can make me really angry! I think they see me as a pain…” The situation sometimes escalates into arguments.

Social Pressure and the Intimacy of Cutlery

Alice observes that this habit isn’t always accepted in society. “Depending on the context, I force myself to use the same utensils as everyone else, even if it’s much more uncomfortable for me. It’s an integration effort!” Recently, she felt “very uncomfortable” when the topic came up during a meal. “For me, it’s relatively intimate,” she says.

Julie echoes that sentiment. “Generally, for me to allow myself to eat with this utensil, especially a small spoon, I need to be intimate with the people at the table. In many social circumstances, if I’m invited to dinner, I use cutlery.”

Yet Julie wants to dispel one criticism she often hears: that eating with a spoon is “a bit childish.” “I have a 9-year-old daughter, and clearly, it’s not her thing at all!”

As the spoon quietly gains ground, it seems the question is no longer whether it belongs at the table—but why it ever left.
