The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially reprimanded Indian women’s team batter Shafali Verma for violating its code of conduct during a recent match against Zimbabwe, handing the young cricketer a Level 1 offence penalty.
According to the ICC, the incident occurred during the 12th over of the contest, when Verma reacted angrily to a dropped catch by violently throwing the ball onto the ground. The governing body reviewed the episode and determined that her actions constituted a breach of the sport’s disciplinary regulations.
Demerit Point Added to Verma’s Record
As a direct consequence of the Level 1 violation, the ICC has imposed one demerit point on Verma’s disciplinary record. The sanction serves as a formal warning, with further breaches within a specified period potentially leading to more severe penalties, including suspension from future matches.
The reprimand highlights the ICC’s continued scrutiny of player conduct, particularly regarding visible displays of frustration on the field. While competitive intensity is expected at the international level, the council maintains strict standards for on-field behaviour.
What the Sanction Means
- Level 1 Offence: The lowest tier of code of conduct breaches, typically covering minor misconduct such as dissent or inappropriate physical reactions.
- Demerit Point: Verma now carries one point on her record; accumulating four or more within a two-year window can trigger a suspension.
- Official Reprimand: The ICC has formally notified the player and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) of the sanction.
Verma, known for her aggressive batting at the top of the order, has been a key figure in India’s women’s setup. The 20-year-old will need to manage her on-field emotions carefully as she looks to avoid further disciplinary action in upcoming fixtures.
The ICC has not indicated whether Verma will contest the sanction, and the player has yet to issue a public statement regarding the incident.
