Annural Khalid and Burrah Open Up About Their Cross-Border Collaboration ‘Mumtaaz’

**Annural Khalid and Burrah Open Up About Their Cross-Border Collaboration…

Indian singer Burrah and Pakistani pop sensation Annural Khalid have joined forces for a heartfelt love ballad titled *Mumtaaz*, and the duo recently shared insights into their collaboration in an interview with *Rolling Stone India*. The song, a poignant exploration of love and loss, marks a significant cross-border musical partnership.

Khalid, known for her emotive vocals, expressed her fondness for “sad love songs,” particularly those that delve into themes of “unfinished, unreciprocated love.” With a laugh, she added, “We both turned out to be sadbois from within.” Burrah, on the other hand, revealed that he has been a fan of Khalid’s work since her breakout performance on Coke Studio Pakistan with the hit track *Jhol*, featuring Lahori rapper Maanu.

“It helps when you’re working with someone you’re a fan of,” Burrah said. “Then, you enter with your ego diminished, both of you are reciprocative to each other’s ideas, and there’s an unconditionality there.” This mutual respect and creative synergy laid the foundation for their collaboration.

The song came to life during a songwriting camp organized by Warner Music India at composer-producer Sunny MR’s studio in Mumbai. Burrah, who is working on his upcoming album, enlisted frequent collaborator Youngveer to contribute to the track. Describing the creative process, Burrah recalled, “Everyone came into the room and saw how this desolate-looking room had come to life with our song in just 15 minutes. There were five or six people just dancing to the song by the end of it, so we knew it was a great song we had to make.”

For Khalid, the song’s message resonated deeply when she first heard the demo. “Everybody’s energies made this track so special,” she said. The theme of unrequited love also served as a bridge between the two artists, helping them connect on a personal level. “This was very mutual, and it all came naturally. Neither of us have egos like that, which also helped,” Khalid added.

Burrah revealed that Khalid’s involvement inspired him to explore deeper themes in the song, including the historical trauma of Partition. “In the first draft before Annural hopped on, it was a very therapeutic, coping sort of song. I was just trying to process my own heartbreak. But when Annural came in, I had a wake-up moment. I thought, ‘Let’s just make the story about heartbreak in Punjab,’” he explained.

The final version of *Mumtaaz* tells the story of lovers separated by Partition and circumstances beyond their control. Burrah described it as a tribute to “one of the worst things that has happened to our nation in recent history — like our lands getting divided because of some ego factor and some sort of outer force we cannot comprehend.”

Looking ahead, Khalid has more collaborations in the pipeline with Indian artists, as well as a solo album that has been in the works for over a year. “There’s no point in overthinking it — the more you overthink, the more it stays with you,” she said. Burrah, meanwhile, is preparing for a “very big LP” release next year, along with an EP set to drop in April 2025, which he described as “a deeper, slightly more vulnerable experience with me as an artist.”

The collaboration between Annural Khalid and Burrah not only highlights the power of music to transcend borders but also underscores the shared cultural and emotional threads that bind the two nations. *Mumtaaz* stands as a testament to the universal language of love and loss, resonating with listeners on both sides of the divide.
