At just 22 years and 3 months old, Arthur Fils will become the first French player in six years to enter the ATP Top 10, debuting at world No. 9 when the rankings are officially published on Monday, September 28.
The milestone marks a significant moment for French tennis, which had not seen a player crack the top ten since Gaël Monfils in October 2020. Fils becomes the thirteenth Frenchman to reach the Top 10 since the ATP rankings were established in 1973.
A Season of Breakthrough Results
Fils began 2026 ranked No. 41 in the world before steadily climbing through a series of strong performances:
- Final at the Doha tournament
- Title at Barcelona
- Title at the Cincinnati Masters 1000
- Semifinals at both Miami and Madrid
His ascent was further aided by ranking drops from Taylor Fritz and Alex de Minaur. Remarkably, Fils secured his Top 10 position despite winning only one match across the two Grand Slam tournaments he contested in 2026.
Praise From Former Top 10 Player
Lucas Pouille, who first entered the Top 10 eight years ago, believes Fils has earned his place among the elite.
“He has achieved this ranking without having played certain Grand Slams — the Australian Open, Roland-Garros — so it’s a major step in his quest, which I believe is to win a Grand Slam,” said the former professional player. “Now, for me, in terms of pure level of play, he belongs to the two or three players who follow Sinner and Alcaraz, who are still well ahead. But today he has the opportunity to do great things. He is not going to stop there.”
Youngest French Player Since Gasquet
Fils is the second-youngest French player ever to break into the world’s top ten, trailing only Richard Gasquet. With no ranking points to defend until February 2027, he is well-positioned to climb even higher.
The young Frenchman appears poised to challenge for a Top 5 ranking in the near future, signaling a bright chapter ahead for French tennis on the international stage.
