The number of cancer patients is increasing in the 21st century, but there is hope as “treatment is more possible than ever before.” The five-year survival rate for cancer is 55% for men and 61% for women. Additionally, 40% of cancer cases can be prevented through exercise, a Mediterranean diet, sun protection, and avoiding alcohol and tobacco.
On February 4th, on World Cancer Day, an analysis of cancer cases was conducted in Spain. This day was established in 2000 and this year marks the 25th anniversary. On this occasion, the Spanish Network of Cancer Registries (REDECAN) and the National Statistics Institute (INE) reviewed the data on cancer in Spain. According to Patricia Nieto, a research officer at the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC), “One in two men and one in three women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.” She further stated, “This disease encompasses over 200 different types, each with its own symptoms and subtypes.”
Along with the increase in cancer cases, there is also a decrease in deaths due to cancer. Nieto mentioned, “We now have modern treatment techniques including radiotherapy, surgery, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy, which are aiding us in the fight against cancer.” The goal of AECC is to achieve a 70% survival rate for cancer by 2030. Recent statistics show a “significant decrease” in deaths due to cancer, although an increase of 3.29% in expected diagnoses by the year 2024.
Nieto also highlighted that “there is a difference in the survival rate of cancer patients.” Lung cancer is the most deadly, while cases of prostate, testicular, and thyroid cancer have better survival rates. Success stories of patients who have successfully fought against cancer were also shared during the event. Maria Ferrier-Vidal, 52, spoke about transforming her life after a cancer diagnosis, stating, “Cancer, although challenging, is also a lesson in life.” Similarly, Javier Bernal, 22, shared his experience of undergoing cancer treatment, emphasizing the importance of monitoring one’s health during treatment.
The World Cancer Day event raised awareness about the fight against cancer and highlighted the importance of research. The day emphasized hope and love, aiming to provide each patient with the best possible treatment.
