Tragedy struck the town of Évreux in Normandy, France, when a car plowed into a crowd following an altercation at a local wine bar, resulting in one fatality and six injuries. The tragic events unfolded overnight from Friday, August 29, to Saturday, August 30.

Guy Lefrand, the mayor of Évreux, shared on social media that the incident left five people injured, with two in critical condition while three sustained less severe injuries. A sixth individual, a 50-year-old woman, was treated on the scene by emergency medical services.

The chaos began after a dispute broke out at a wine bar in the town center, involving a young woman and several men, as reported by Rémi Coutin, the public prosecutor of Évreux. Following the altercation, security personnel evacuated nearly a hundred patrons from the venue, triggering a rush outside.

It was during this disorderly exit that an individual reportedly retrieved a vehicle and intentionally reversed at high speed into the assembled crowd, according to Coutin’s statement relayed by local media outlet BFMTV.

In the course of the investigation, three suspects, including a woman and two men, have been arrested and are in police custody for questioning. Prosecutors have initiated a probe into charges of homicide and attempted homicide, firmly ruling out any terrorist, racist, or other prejudicial motives behind the incident.

Mayor Lefrand assured the public that the situation is now calm, expressing heartfelt condolences and solidarity with the victims, their families, and friends.

This event has sent ripples through the community, highlighting tensions and evoking widespread sorrow and sympathy for those affected. The investigation continues as authorities work to understand the full scope and instigate legal proceedings.
