Chilling Confrontation at the Courthouse
In a harrowing scene outside the Sion courthouse in Switzerland, the owners of the “Le Constellation” bar were confronted on Thursday by the grieving relatives of the 41 young people who died in the devastating New Year’s Eve fire at their establishment in Crans-Montana.
Video footage obtained by media outlets shows a young boy directly addressing proprietors Jacques and Jessica Moretti, demanding: “Look me in the eyes. You killed my brother!” As the couple attempted to enter the tribunal, Jessica Moretti broke down in tears and tried to turn away while the boy persisted.
A Torrent of Grief and Accusations
The emotional atmosphere was charged with pain. In the background, a man could be heard stating, “My son is dead, he was burned,” while a woman wailed, “Where is my son?” Other shouts from the encircling crowd included, “You burned our children,” “41 children, you killed,” and “You are murderers!”
Jacques Moretti responded to the families, saying, “We are with you! We will take responsibility, we will take responsibility. We promise you. We are here for justice!”
Legal Proceedings and a “Humanly Rare” Encounter
The Morettis are being heard at the HES-SO Valais-Wallis tribunal in Sion. They face a criminal investigation for “negligent homicide, negligent bodily injury, and negligent fire.”
The previous day, they had faced the mother of two injured young women in court. She described that encounter as “an extremely intense and humanly rare moment.” The couple’s lawyer, Me Nicola Meier, stated that the exchange was marked by a mutual need to speak and that the Morettis would be available for other victims’ families who felt the same need.
A Community’s Unending Trauma
The fire at “Le Constellation” on December 31st resulted in one of Switzerland’s deadliest nightclub disasters in decades. The court confrontation underscores the profound and ongoing trauma for the families and the local community as the judicial process seeks to establish accountability for the tragedy.
