Torrential rainfall battering eastern Spain has killed at least two people and left one person missing, authorities said Sunday, as the Barcelona region remained under a state of alert amid ongoing flood risks.
Two Dead, One Missing in Catalonia
David Borrell, chief of the Catalan fire brigade, confirmed the toll at a press conference. “It appears there are two fatalities, as well as at least one person missing,” he said.
One victim died after a wall collapsed at a campsite in Tordera, while the other drowned in a flooded garage in Montornès del Vallès. Both localities are in the province of Barcelona.
Extreme Danger Persists Across Region
Spain’s national meteorological agency, Aemet, warned Sunday morning that the situation remained critical in parts of Barcelona and Girona. “The extreme danger situation continues in certain areas of Barcelona and Girona. Overnight, more than 100 litres per square metre accumulated at numerous points,” the agency said on X.
Spain’s Civil Protection agency sent emergency alerts to mobile phones of residents living near the Besós river, warning of a “risk of overflow” and instructing people to move to the upper floors of their homes if flooding occurred.
Public Events Cancelled as Storm Intensifies
The severe weather forced the cancellation Saturday of a demonstration for housing rights in Barcelona, part of coordinated protests organised in dozens of Spanish cities. In Madrid, tens of thousands of people still gathered for the housing rally.
The downpours affecting Barcelona stem from a weather phenomenon characterised by “very violent and persistent showers and storms” across eastern Spain. The event began Thursday and was expected to end Sunday, according to Aemet.
Earlier Flooding Death in Castilla-La Mancha
The same weather system had already claimed a life Saturday, when a 102-year-old woman was swept away by floodwaters in a locality in the Castilla-La Mancha region in southeastern Spain.
Ongoing Risk
Authorities have urged residents in affected areas to remain vigilant and follow official guidance as emergency services continue search and rescue operations for the missing person. The full extent of the damage is not yet known, and officials warned the death toll could rise further.
