France is reeling from the aftermath of severe thunderstorms that have ravaged the country, causing widespread damage and tragic loss of life. A 47-year-old woman has died in the Nièvre department after a tree branch fell on her during the storms.
The storms, which began on Tuesday, intensified on Wednesday, prompting Météo-France to issue an orange alert for 28 departments. Despite not being under an orange alert, Nièvre was profoundly affected. The fatal incident happened at a campsite in Saint-Honoré-les-Bains, where two people were severely injured. The woman succumbed to her injuries at the hospital in Dijon.
Saint-Honoré-les-Bains endured severe weather on Tuesday night, resulting in a large-scale evacuation of 770 people from the municipal campsite due to rising creek levels. Emergency services swiftly responded as strong winds brought down numerous trees. The situation was dire even though the region was under a lesser yellow alert, unlike the neighboring Côte-d’Or and Saône-et-Loire, which were on orange alert.
Alongside the tragic fatality, the storms unleashed a barrage of nearly 10,000 lightning strikes across the country. The hardest-hit areas included Allier, Côte-d’Or, Saône-et-Loire, and Nièvre, according to Keraunos Observatory.
The severe weather also impacted the south-west, where hail and winds reaching speeds of 70 to 100 km/h battered the region. Ex-hurricane Erin’s remnants have driven a significant cyclone swell, forcing the cancellation of numerous events in Brittany, Normandy, and the south.
Significant festivities like the Sea and Nautical Festival in Brest and the Millésime Festival in Douarnenez were called off. Similarly, the Saint-Gobain festival in La Verrerie was canceled preemptively. Ferry services to the Île d’Yeu ceased, while cities like Toulouse and Nice took precautionary measures by canceling events and closing parks and gardens.
As France continues to assess the damage, the chaos serves as a stark reminder of nature’s unyielding force and the vital importance of preparedness. With the storm dissipating, recovery efforts are underway to bring normalcy back to the affected regions.
