L’Eurasienne, a well-known restaurant in Epernay for its mix of Italian and Asian cuisine, has sparked outrage on social media over its pricing. The controversy began with a Facebook post by a customer named Ben Chris, who criticized the high costs after dining at the establishment on August 25.

The post, which has drawn nearly 200 comments and 1,000 shares, described Chris’s surprise at being charged 43.50 euros for a meal that included a 21-euro ham and cheese pizza, a 7-euro bottle of Coke, and a 9.50-euro beer. An additional 6 euros was added for sharing a pizza with his young daughter. Chris called the charges “an aberration” and vowed never to return.

Online sentiment largely supports Chris, with many questioning the rationale behind the 6-euro charge for sharing utensils. Some comments included proposals to report the restaurant to local fraud authorities. The general sentiment reflects disbelief over the prices, which appear significantly higher than other local eateries.

Among the online critics, one anonymous user described the restaurant’s price strategy as “daylight robbery,” lamenting the 7-euro Coke—pointing out that such prices are unprecedented even in high-end locales like Saint-Tropez.

Jean-Marc, co-owner of L’Eurasienne alongside his sister Julie, expressed frustration over the online backlash. He admitted to losing sleep amidst the storm of comments. The co-owners explained their pricing policy, noting that the 3-euro cover charge is stated in bold on the menu to offset situations where a single pizza is shared, limiting table turnover on their non-expansible terrace.

As for the 7-euro Coke, they claim the price is intentionally inflated to encourage customers to opt for local artisanal juices or wines, aligning with their commitment to supporting small producers. Despite financial pressures, Jean-Marc stressed that the family business, operating for over 32 years, prioritizes quality and ethical sourcing over competitiveness in pricing.

The sibling co-owners also highlighted the economic reality of maintaining a restaurant, including the rising costs of ingredients and labor, insisting that their prices reflect the value of their artisanal approach. While online criticism is unavoidable, they remain supported by loyal patrons and fellow restaurateurs who appreciate their dedication to quality.

Ben Chris reportedly reconnected with the owners after posting his grievances, offering to rescind his Google reviews. Meanwhile, Jean-Marc is considering legal action in response to the potential impact on their business reputation.
