Food Banks Launch Annual Collection Drive to Aid 2.4 Million People

What to Donate to Food Banks as Annual Drive Kicks Off This Friday

Essential Donations Sought Nationwide

Food banks across France launched their annual collection drive on Friday, November 28, seeking public donations to support approximately 2.4 million people facing food insecurity. The three-day initiative, running through Sunday, invites citizens to purchase and drop off essential food and hygiene items at 7,465 collection points nationwide, including supermarkets, schools, town halls, and businesses.

Rising Demand for Food Assistance

The organization reports a steady increase in demand for food aid since 2008, with a particularly sharp 34% rise in beneficiaries between 2020 and 2023. “We’re currently seeing strong demand with very empty shelves, particularly needing cooking oil and baby products,” explained Jean-Louis Duprez, president of the French Federation of Food Banks (FFBA).

Priority Products for Donation

Food banks emphasize the importance of non-perishable items with high nutritional value. The most needed products include:

  • Canned goods (fish, meat, fruits, vegetables)
  • Staples (pasta, rice, couscous)
  • Dried legumes
  • Cooking oils
  • Sugar
  • Prepared meals

While less nutritionally dense items like chocolate, cookies, spreads, and applesauce are also accepted, the focus remains on nutritionally valuable products. Hygiene products are equally welcome, including:

  • Soap and shower gel
  • Shampoo
  • Toothbrushes
  • Menstrual products
  • Baby supplies (powdered milk and diapers)

Changing Profile of Beneficiaries

The organization notes evolving demographics among those seeking assistance. “While we continue to see single parents and elderly people with small pensions, in recent years we’re increasingly seeing employed people with permanent contracts who struggle to make ends meet due to inflation,” Duprez added.

Alternative Ways to Contribute

For those unable to donate physical items, the MonPanierSolidaire.org platform enables online financial contributions. These funds are used to purchase the same essential food and hygiene products distributed through the network.

Significance of Public Donations

The public collection represents approximately 10% of the organization’s total supplies. The remaining 90% comes from recovered products from supermarkets, the food industry, and farmers, supported by state and European Union funding. Annually, the federation collects and purchases over 128,000 tons of products nationwide, equivalent to 223 million meals.
