A new, targeted COVID-19 vaccination campaign begins in France this week, focusing squarely on protecting the most vulnerable citizens from severe illness as the virus continues to circulate.
Who Is Eligible for the Spring Booster?
The campaign, running until the end of June, prioritizes individuals at the highest risk of severe disease. This includes:
- People aged 80 and over.
- Residents of nursing homes (Ehpad).
- Immunocompromised individuals.
Other patients deemed at very high risk may also qualify after consultation with a healthcare professional. Health authorities are also encouraging close contacts of these vulnerable individuals to get vaccinated to help reduce transmission risks.
Timing and Rationale for the Campaign
The recommendation follows established health guidelines, as vaccine protection wanes over time. A booster dose is advised from six months after the last injection or a previous COVID-19 infection.
This additional dose aims to maintain protection throughout the summer, a period when the virus remains active and extreme heat can further weaken at-risk populations. The campaign complements the broader autumn vaccination drive, which runs alongside the flu shot and typically includes everyone over 65.
Continued Vigilance Required
In a statement, the French Directorate General for Health (DGS) emphasized that vaccination must be combined with continued protective measures. These include ventilating indoor spaces, regular hand washing, and wearing a mask when experiencing symptoms or when around fragile individuals.
While the healthcare system has not faced extreme pressure from COVID-19 in recent months, the threat to the most vulnerable remains. The spring booster shot is fully covered and can be administered in residential care facilities or by city-based healthcare professionals.
