Google has unveiled its latest innovation in image generation, the Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, which promises to revolutionize visual editing with artificial intelligence. Announced on August 26, 2025, the new model from Google DeepMind is designed to offer users greater control over visual retouching, ensuring consistency and likeness across different images—addressing a common shortfall among competitors.
Before its official debut, the model, codenamed “nano-banana” internally, had already made headlines by topping performance charts on LMArena, a platform renowned for objectively evaluating AI models. Gemini 2.5 Flash Image has been recognized for excelling in the Image Edit and Text-to-Image categories, surpassing existing technologies like 4o Image Generation, which has been integrated into ChatGPT since March.
The unique capability of Gemini 2.5 Flash Image lies in its ability to modify or create new elements within an image without compromising visual quality, ensuring a more seamless and less artificial appearance. Nicole Brichtova, product lead at Google DeepMind, emphasized the model’s advancements in visual quality and its ability to adhere to user instructions during a discussion with TechCrunch.
One of the model’s standout features is its ability to combine multiple photos to create whole new scenes or modify specific parts of an image while retaining the rest. For instance, users can add furniture to an empty room or change a person’s attire without losing the original photo’s integrity, all through simple prompts. Google has assured users that every image created will carry a visible “AI” watermark along with an invisible SynthID digital watermark to indicate AI generation, thus preventing misuse.
Although the new tool might be unavailable to some users immediately, Google has begun its global rollout through the Gemini app. This service will be accessible to both free and paid users, allowing for varied applications in image generation and editing as they interact with the feature.
With these advancements, Google takes a significant leap forward in AI-driven visual technology, promising cutting-edge solutions while maintaining high ethical standards in digital creation.
