Sheikh Ibrahim Al Madani, a muezzin at the Grand Mosque in Makkah, passed away on Monday, hours after delivering his final call to prayer from Islam’s holiest site.
According to reports, Al Madani performed the Fajr adhan at the Grand Mosque in the early hours of Monday, marking the last time his voice would echo through the sacred precinct. Footage of that final adhan was shared by Inside the Haramain.
Saudi media reported that Al Madani had been undergoing treatment for an illness before his death. The cause of death was not initially disclosed in the reports.
Funeral Prayer Scheduled After Asr
His funeral prayer is scheduled to be offered after the Asr prayer on Monday at the Grand Mosque in Makkah, after which he will be laid to rest at Al-Mualla Cemetery, according to reports.
A Voice Synonymous With the Fajr Adhan
Al Madani was among the recognised muezzins of the Grand Mosque and was particularly known for his Fajr adhan and takbeerat. He was also involved in relaying the imam’s takbeers to worshippers through the mosque’s sound system.
Born in Madinah in 1976, Al Madani grew up in a religious family and was influenced by his grandfather, who was a memoriser of the Quran. He later studied Quranic sciences.
From Neighbourhood Mosque to the Grand Mosque
- Al Madani began serving as a muezzin at the age of 15 at a neighbourhood mosque in Madinah.
- He continued performing the duty on a rotating basis with other muezzins until completing college.
- He later resumed his service as a muezzin and was formally appointed to serve at the Grand Mosque in Makkah in 1439 AH, corresponding to 2017-18.
Outpouring of Condolences
News of his death prompted an outpouring of condolences, while recordings of his adhan and takbeerat from the Grand Mosque were widely shared on social media.
