Palestinian Militant Group Hamas Announces Release of Three Israeli Captives
Palestinian militant organization Hamas has declared the release of three more Israeli captives in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. This exchange is being carried out under a ceasefire agreement aimed at ending the 15-month-long conflict in Gaza. According to Reuters, the Israelis set to be released today include Ohad Benami, Eli Shalabi, and Avner Levi. Two of these individuals were captured on October 7, 2023, from the area of Kibbutz Be’eri, while Levi was abducted from the Neve Musikk festival on the same day. Hamas has confirmed that these three Israelis will be handed over to the International Red Cross, who will then transfer them to the Israeli military.
As per Hamas’s statement, in exchange for the release of the captives, Israel will release 183 Palestinian prisoners, some of whom have been serving sentences for their involvement in past attacks. Among the released prisoners, 18 are serving life sentences, and 111 were captured during the conflict in Gaza. Armed Hamas militants and masked fighters are stationed at the exchange site in the central Gaza area of Deir al-Balah. The families of the released Israelis are experiencing a mix of anticipation, hope, and fear. The Benami family expressed joy at the news of Ohad’s release.
Michael Levi, Avner’s brother, lost his wife and three-year-old child in the October 7 attack. Michael said, “I can’t even begin to express the mix of emotions of joy and sadness. Finally, this is all coming to an end.” He further stated that he is eagerly awaiting the reunion with his brother and nephew. This exchange is the latest development in the release of captives and prisoners, with Hamas having already released 13 Israelis and Israel freeing 583 Palestinian prisoners from its jails. The initial phase of the agreement involves the release of around 2,000 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for 33 Israeli children, women, the elderly, and the sick or injured.
Negotiations for the second phase have begun this week, with the aim of releasing the remaining captives and achieving a complete cessation of hostilities between Gaza and the Israeli military. There are hopes for the success of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza, although recent demands by U.S. President Donald Trump have raised concerns about its success. Arab nations and Palestinian groups have rejected this proposal, with critics arguing that it amounts to ethnic cleansing. It is important to note that on October 7, 2023, Hamas fighters carried out a major terrorist attack on Israel, resulting in the deaths of nearly 1,200 people. In response, Israel launched extensive aerial and ground military operations in Gaza, leading to over 47,000 Palestinian fatalities, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
