Vermax, the dragon of the heir apparent, is struck by a harpoon but manages to tear free from the line dragging it toward the depths.
Salvation turns to catastrophe with the arrival of a third dragon: the massive wild dragon Sheepstealer, ridden by Baela’s sister, Rhaena. Uncontrollable and indiscriminate, Sheepstealer ignores its rider’s commands and attacks everything in its path, friend and foe alike. It targets Vermax. Desperately trying to evade the feral beast, the young dragon is struck by a second harpoon and plummets into the. Jacaerys frees himself from his saddle but is pierced by a volley of arrows. He does not survive.
The aftermath is gut-wrenching. When Jace’s body is returned to Dragonstone, Rhaenyra collapses. The Queen has lost her firstborn son, her heir, and her fourth child. Of her sons, only the very young Joffrey remains. While this death may not be the most gruesome in the series’ history, it is already cemented as one of the most consequential and memorable of the season.
