Major General Mohammad Bagheri, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, held high-level meetings in Islamabad on Monday with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir. The discussions centered on bolstering the longstanding fraternal ties between the two nations, with a focus on enhancing trade, economic, and defense cooperation. Both sides also emphasized the need for coordinated strategies to address shared challenges, including terrorism.
During his meeting with President Zardari, General Bagheri underscored the importance of strengthening trade and economic relations between Pakistan and Iran, emphasizing mutual interests. The leaders also highlighted terrorism as a common threat and discussed the necessity of adopting a unified approach to combat it effectively.
Following the presidential meeting, General Bagheri visited the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, where he met with General Asim Munir. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the military leaders engaged in detailed discussions on the current regional security environment and bilateral defense cooperation. Upon his arrival at GHQ, General Bagheri paid tribute to Pakistan’s martyrs by laying a floral wreath at the Martyrs’ Monument.
Speaking to Iranian media after the meetings, General Bagheri noted that Iran and Pakistan are actively expanding military cooperation across various domains. He highlighted the significant improvement in relations between the armed forces of both countries in recent years, describing the progress as a result of constructive agreements. The Iranian general also emphasized efforts to transform the shared border into a “border of friendship and a hub for extensive economic ties” for both nations.
General Bagheri reiterated that Iran and Pakistan are two major Muslim countries in the strategically sensitive regions of Western and South Asia, maintaining extensive relations with each other. Over the past year, Tehran and Islamabad have shared similar stances on numerous regional issues. The discussions with Pakistani officials, he added, focused on regional developments, aiming to enable both neighboring countries to adopt a unified position in various international forums.
These meetings come at a time when both nations are emphasizing the need for enhanced security cooperation along their shared border and joint efforts to counter terrorism. Both sides agreed that strengthening mutual cooperation is essential for regional stability and security.
The visit underscores the commitment of both Iran and Pakistan to deepen their strategic partnership, particularly in addressing shared security concerns and fostering economic collaboration.
