Escalation Despite Truce
Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip early Wednesday killed at least 17 people, including three children, and wounded 23 others, according to the Hamas-run civil defense agency. The strikes targeted areas in both northern and southern Gaza, marking another deadly violation of a ceasefire that has been repeatedly breached since its announcement last October.
Conflicting Narratives
The Israeli military stated it conducted “precise strikes” after “terrorists opened fire” on its soldiers, seriously wounding an officer near the northern Gaza “yellow line.” This line demarcates the Israeli army’s withdrawal from approximately half the territory under the initial phase of a U.S.-backed peace plan. Meanwhile, Gaza’s health ministry reports over 529 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since the ceasefire began, while Israel says it has lost four soldiers in the same period.
Context of a Protracted Conflict
The latest violence follows a deadly Saturday that saw 32 Palestinians killed in Israeli bombardments, which Israel said were responses to ceasefire violations. Egypt and Qatar, mediating between Israel and Hamas, have condemned repeated breaches and called for restraint. These incidents occur against a backdrop of a severe humanitarian crisis, with most of Gaza’s over two million residents displaced and living in tents or makeshift shelters.
Border Reopening Amid Tensions
The strikes came just two days after the highly partial reopening of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt, which allowed limited Palestinian movement. The crossing had been closed by Israel since May 2024. Its reopening, facilitated by U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, was a long-awaited development for Gazans and aid organizations, though the overall humanitarian situation remains dire.
War’s Heavy Toll
The conflict, triggered by Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel that killed 1,221 people, has resulted in at least 71,769 Palestinian deaths in Gaza according to local health authorities. Independent verification of casualty figures remains challenging due to Israeli restrictions on media access within the territory.
