Diplomatic Tensions Rise Over Incident Involving Israeli Settler
Italy has summoned Israel’s ambassador to Rome in a formal diplomatic protest after two Italian Carabinieri officers were threatened at gunpoint near the Palestinian city of Ramallah. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, has drawn strong condemnation from Rome and renewed concerns about settler violence in the occupied West Bank.
The two officers, stationed at Italy’s General Consulate in Jerusalem, were reportedly detained in Palestinian territory near Ramallah. According to a statement from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, they were “held at gunpoint, likely by a ‘settler’ (an Israeli citizen in Palestinian territory) with an automatic rifle.”
Formal Protests Lodged
Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani requested the summoning of Ambassador Alon Bar “to obtain clarifications” and to reiterate Italy’s “strong protest” regarding the Sunday incident. The ministry stated that Italian authorities expressed their “strong disapproval and protest about this incident” to the Israeli envoy.
The diplomatic démarche also served as an opportunity for Italy to repeat its government’s “concern about the behavior of violent settlers in the West Bank.” In parallel, Italy’s embassy in Tel Aviv has submitted an official protest to Israeli authorities.
Broader Context of Settler Violence
The incident highlights ongoing tensions in the West Bank, where violence involving Israeli settlers and Palestinian residents has been a persistent concern for the international community. Italy’s forceful response underscores the seriousness with which it views threats against its diplomatic security personnel.
No injuries were reported in the confrontation, but the weapon-pointing against members of Italy’s prestigious Carabinieri force—who serve in both military and policing capacities—has triggered a significant diplomatic response from Rome.
