Karachi: A sessions court in Karachi has sentenced a man to 10 years imprisonment for raping his 10-year-old nephew in the Lyari area. The verdict was delivered by Additional District and Sessions Judge Abdul Zahoor Chandio, who is also the presiding officer of the Gender-Based Violence Courts (South).
The accused, Muneer Ahmed, was found guilty under Section 375 of the Pakistan Penal Code, which pertains to rape. The court also imposed a fine of Rs100,000 on the convict. Judge Chandio emphasized that the victim’s testimony played a crucial role in securing the conviction, highlighting that the testimony of a victim in sexual offense cases is of significant importance, especially when supported by additional evidence.
Prosecutor Irfana Qadri detailed the events leading to the conviction. On August 16, 2023, the incident occurred on the rooftop of Ahmed’s residence in Chakiwara, as reported by the victim’s family. The young boy testified that while he was playing outside, Ahmed, who lived nearby, called him to assist with locking a door. Once on the rooftop, Ahmed overpowered the boy and committed the assault, subsequently threatening him with severe consequences if he spoke out.
This case underscores the ongoing challenges in addressing and prosecuting gender-based violence in Pakistan, particularly crimes against minors. The court’s decision reflects a commitment to upholding justice for victims of such heinous acts.
