Netanyahu Urges Trump on Iran Missiles as Israel Threatens Solo Strike

Netanyahu Urges Trump on Iran Missiles as Israel Threatens Solo Strike

High-Stakes Summit on Iran’s Ballistic Threat

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held an urgent meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on Wednesday, February 11, primarily focused on Iran’s expanding ballistic missile program. The summit, originally scheduled a week later, was moved forward at Netanyahu’s request, underscoring the gravity of Israel’s concerns as U.S.-Iran negotiations gain momentum.

Israel’s “Existential” Missile Concerns

Netanyahu stated he would present Israel’s “views on the principles of negotiations” to Trump, emphasizing issues “important not only for Israel, but for anyone who wants peace and security in the Middle East.” Analysts interpret this as a direct effort to ensure the U.S. does not exclude Iran’s missile capabilities from ongoing diplomatic talks.

David Rigoulet-Roze, a researcher at the French Institute for Strategic Analysis, noted, “Israel’s most urgent problem is not immediately the nuclear issue, but rather the ballistic one—missiles and drones.” He highlighted that Israel views the missile threat as “existential,” particularly following a 12-day conflict in June 2025 during which the two nations exchanged missile and airstrikes.

Recent Iranian advancements, including the Khorramshahr 4 missile—reportedly capable of reaching Israel in under 12 minutes—have heightened tensions. Iran has consistently refused to negotiate on its missile program, calling it a non-negotiable defense priority.

U.S.-Iran Talks and Israeli Apprehensions

Initial U.S.-Iran talks in Oman on February 6 were described by both sides as having “started well.” American demands reportedly include Iran abandoning its nuclear program, limiting ballistic capabilities, and ceasing support for groups like Hezbollah and Hamas. However, Israel fears Washington may compromise on missiles to secure a broader deal.

“Israel’s worry is whether the U.S. intends to integrate this issue into the parameters of a possible agreement,” Rigoulet-Roze explained. Netanyahu personally conveyed updated Israeli intelligence to Trump, alleging Iran now possesses 1,500–2,000 ballistic missiles, 60–80 launchers, and a production capacity of up to 200 missiles monthly.

Threat of Unilateral Israeli Action

According to reports, Israel has warned the U.S. it may strike Iran alone if demands to curb missile development are unmet. Such an operation, analysts suggest, could be more extensive than previous engagements, with Israeli officials privately describing a potential “operation on steroids.”

While Trump has positioned himself as a peacemaker and prefers diplomacy, he has also threatened military action and deployed naval assets near Iran. The meeting has drawn sharp criticism from Tehran, which accused Israel of sabotaging diplomatic efforts and urged the U.S. to resist external pressure.

Regional Implications and Military Risks

The summit occurs amid fragile regional stability. Rigoulet-Roze concluded, “Given the current parameters and the reaffirmation of respective red lines, it’s hard to see how a military option can be avoided.” The outcome of Netanyahu’s appeal to Trump may determine whether diplomacy prevails or the region edges closer to renewed conflict.
