In a significant diplomatic development, Pakistan has agreed with Russia to activate a joint antiterrorism dialogue, aimed at bolstering cooperative efforts to combat global terrorism. This agreement was reached during a meeting in Islamabad between Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and the Russian Ambassador to Pakistan, Albert P. Khorev.
The meeting underscored a commitment from both nations to address the menace of terrorism through increased collaboration. “There was an agreement between both countries to activate antiterrorism dialogue,” stated the Pakistan Interior Ministry following the discussions. The ministry further emphasized the necessity for joint multilateral actions to effectively control the global threat of terrorism.
In addition to focusing on terrorism, the two leaders discussed enhancing cooperation to curb drug trafficking. Ambassador Khorev extended an invitation to Pakistani officers to participate in anti-narcotics training sessions in Moscow and Siberia, reflecting a broadening of mutual assistance in tackling transnational crime.
Both countries also agreed to maximize the exchange of delegations, which is expected to strengthen bilateral relations in various domains. The talks come on the heels of recent engagements between the two nations, including discussions on student exchange programs and tourism.
The backdrop of these talks includes a visit by Russia’s Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin to Islamabad last October for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, where further avenues for cooperation in trade, industry, science, and technology were explored. This visit also saw the signing of barter deals between the two countries, exchanging agricultural commodities to boost trade.
Furthermore, Pakistan and Russia conducted a joint military exercise, Druzhba VII, last October, highlighting their commitment to deepening defense cooperation. These developments mark a significant strengthening of ties between the two countries, as they work toward enhancing mutual interests and addressing shared challenges on the global stage.
