Captain Rules Out Major Overhaul
Pakistan’s T20I captain, Salman Ali Agha, has indicated that the national team will not undergo significant changes ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. Speaking on the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) podcast, Agha stated the team’s combination has been settled after months of preparation and is expected to remain consistent.
“I don’t think there will be any major changes before the World Cup. This is the combination we will continue with,” Agha said. He emphasized that all players have been assigned specific roles and the team will move forward with the established structure.
Leadership and Preparation Plans
Agha also dismissed speculation about a potential change in captaincy before the mega event. “As of now, the Pakistan team will compete in the T20 World Cup under my leadership,” he affirmed.
The captain outlined the team’s preparation roadmap, noting Pakistan has six T20 matches remaining before the tournament. He stressed the importance of consistency, stating, “We cannot make big changes in these six matches. We have played with this group for six months, and the results have started to come.”
Pakistan is scheduled to tour Sri Lanka for a T20I series, which Agha believes will be crucial for both senior players familiar with the conditions and new players gaining valuable experience. Following that, the team is expected to host Australia for a series concluding shortly before the World Cup.
Tournament Context and Ambitions
The ICC T20 World Cup 2026, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, is scheduled from February 7 to March 8. Pakistan has been placed in Group A alongside India, the USA, Namibia, and the Netherlands.
While expressing confidence in the team’s progress, Agha acknowledged room for improvement. “The team is on the right track, but there is still room for improvement. We want Pakistan to reach the level where everyone hopes to see it,” he said.
Looking beyond the T20 World Cup, Agha shared his long-term ambitions for Pakistan cricket. “These (winning T20 and ODI World Cups) are my dreams, and I would be very happy if they come true,” he remarked, setting his sights on the 2027 ODI World Cup as well.
