Clinical Performance Extends Zalmi’s Dominant Run
Peshawar Zalmi continued their impressive form in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 11, securing a convincing 24-run victory over Multan Sultans at Karachi’s National Bank Stadium. A powerful 68 from Kusal Mendis set up a formidable total of 196/6, which the Zalmi bowlers, led by spinner Sufiyan Muqeem, defended with authority.
Mendis Provides the Fireworks
After being asked to bat first, Zalmi’s innings was ignited by a blistering start from opener Mohammad Haris, who smashed 40 off just 17 balls. The momentum was seamlessly carried forward by Kusal Mendis. The Sri Lankan wicketkeeper-batter anchored the middle overs with a fluent 40-ball 68, striking four fours and three sixes. Valuable contributions from Farhan Yousaf (30) helped Zalmi post a challenging total. For the Sultans, pacers Peter Siddle and Mohammad Ismail took two wickets apiece.
Spin Trio Strangle Sultans’ Chase
Chasing 197, Multan Sultans’ innings never found top gear against a disciplined Zalmi bowling attack. After an early wicket, a 55-run partnership between Steve Smith (31) and Josh Philippe (32) offered hope. However, left-arm spinner Sufiyan Muqeem turned the game decisively in the 10th over by dismissing both set batters. He finished with excellent figures of 3/30 and was deservedly named Player of the Match.
Vice-captain Shan Masood fought hard with a 19-ball 35, but regular wickets pegged the chase back. The spin trio of Muqeem, Iftikhar Ahmed (2 wickets), and Nahid Rana (2 wickets) combined effectively to restrict the flow of runs. The Sultans eventually finished at 172/8 in their 20 overs.
Tournament Context and Standings
This victory marks Zalmi’s fifth win in six matches, further solidifying their position as one of the top contenders in PSL 11. For Multan Sultans, this represents their second defeat of the tournament. The match highlighted Zalmi’s balanced attack, with their spinners proving particularly effective on the Karachi pitch.
