Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif Meets IAEA Director General to Discuss Atomic Technology and Partnership

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif met with the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, at the Prime Minister House on February 12, 2025. According to a statement issued by the Press Information Department (PID), the Prime Minister discussed presenting atomic energy as a solution to climate change issues and emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to sustainable development in atomic technology. The meeting touched upon various peaceful uses of atomic technology, including cancer diagnosis and treatment, agriculture, food preservation, water management, and industrial applications.

Moreover, Prime Minister Sharif highlighted the significant role of Pakistan’s long-standing “productive and mutually beneficial” partnership with the IAEA. He stressed the need for further cooperation to leverage the full potential of atomic technology for peaceful purposes. Grossi praised Pakistan for its achievements in nuclear power generation, industrial development, healthcare, and agriculture through collaboration with the IAEA, contributing to the country’s social and economic progress. He commended Pakistan for its long-term and constructive partnership with the IAEA, ensuring the secure and peaceful utilization of atomic technology worldwide.

On the same day, Grossi also met with Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar to discuss the role of atomic energy in addressing climate change issues and its financial implications. Pakistan values its cooperation with the IAEA and looks forward to future collaborations with the agency. Last year, Pakistan was elected as a member of the IAEA Board of Governors, underscoring its significance in promoting the peaceful use of atomic technology globally.

The IAEA’s technical cooperation program is a major recipient for Pakistan, covering areas such as atomic energy, healthcare, water resource management, food security, and agriculture. Discussions during the meeting also encompassed various global issues on the IAEA’s agenda. Pakistan acknowledges the value of its partnership with the IAEA and remains hopeful for continued collaboration with the agency in the future.
