The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has expelled its senior leader and National Assembly member, Sher Afzal Marwat, from the party. The decision was announced in a notification issued late Wednesday by PTI’s Additional Secretary General, Firdous Shamim Naqvi. The notification stated that Marwat was removed following a show-cause notice, in accordance with the directives of the party’s founder, Imran Khan. Sher Afzal Marwat, who joined PTI in 2017, has now ended his eight-year association with the party.
Reacting to his expulsion on the social media platform X, Marwat expressed that Imran Khan would always remain his leader. He had earlier anticipated the possibility of his removal and had stated on X that he would welcome such a decision due to his frustrations with alleged internal conspiracies within the party.
During PTI’s tenure in government, Marwat was not considered part of the senior leadership; however, following the events of May 9, he emerged as a prominent figure within the party. He faced numerous legal challenges and was arrested multiple times. Marwat’s popularity surged as he played a significant role in mobilizing supporters at various party conventions, although his outspoken nature often led to controversies.
Prior to his association with PTI, Sher Afzal Marwat was affiliated with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F). His family has been actively involved in politics, with his brother Khalid Latif noting their father’s participation in local elections. After pursuing a career in law, Marwat represented Imran Khan in several cases, earning admiration from party workers for his courage.
In recent years, Marwat became known for revitalizing PTI in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa through workers’ conventions. Political analysts have praised his strategic acumen and bravery in navigating post-May 9 circumstances, which resonated with party supporters. Despite facing various accusations on social media, Marwat effectively leveraged his style and media presence to leave a lasting impact on the public.
