Rivers Ravi at Balloki and Sutlej at Ganda Singh Wala remain at ‘exceptionally high’ flood levels, contributing to the severe flooding crisis in Punjab. The devastating floods have claimed at least 41 lives, according to Punjab’s Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).
The PDMA chief reported the successful evacuation of 900,000 people and 600,000 animals from vulnerable areas. Authorities are striving to protect residents and their livestock as they brace for continuous challenges.
Compounding the situation, floodwaters from Punjab are anticipated to flow into neighboring Sindh around September 2-3, warned Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam. As a precautionary measure, the Punjab government has begun controlled breaches of critical flood barriers in an attempt to safeguard urban areas from further devastation.
Top officials including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, federal ministers, and the army chief have visited the affected regions to oversee relief efforts and ensure prompt aid reaches those impacted. The coordinated response underscores the gravity of the crisis as efforts intensify to mitigate the disaster’s impact on these communities.
