In a brazen attack early Tuesday morning, suicide bombers targeted the Federal Constabulary lines in Bannu, Pakistan. The attackers rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into the main entrance, resulting in a powerful explosion, local police reported.
The security breach prompted an immediate response from law enforcement, with Bannu District Police Officer Saleem Abbas spearheading the operation within the premises. Regional Police Officer Sajjad Khan confirmed that four attackers were neutralized in the ensuing confrontation with security forces, while five police officers sustained injuries.
This assault is part of an increasing pattern of violence seen across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, particularly in areas like Bannu, Peshawar, and Bajaur, where police personnel have frequently been under threat.
Since the ceasefire breakdown between the Pakistani government and the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in November 2022, the region has experienced a dramatic rise in terrorist activities. Recent operations in Bannu’s Hoveed and Wazirabad areas led to the apprehension of 14 individuals suspected of facilitating terrorism, with their hideouts subsequently demolished.
In an incident last month, a police constable lost his life in an exchange of gunfire at a Bannu checkpoint that also ended with three attackers dead.
The heightened violence is underscored by recent data from the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies, revealing a shocking 74% increase in militant attacks in August compared to the previous month, making it the most violent period in over ten years.
This story is unfolding, and updates will follow as more information becomes available. While initial reports can be sketchy, efforts will be made to ensure accuracy through reliable sources.
