In the small town of Villach, located in Austria’s southern region of Carinthia, a tragic incident unfolded on Saturday evening when a 14-year-old boy was fatally stabbed. The attack also left five others injured, with two of the victims reported to be in critical condition. Authorities have apprehended a 23-year-old Syrian refugee, identified as Ahmad J., in connection with the stabbings.
The incident occurred around 4 p.m. when the suspect allegedly launched an unprovoked knife attack on passersby. According to police reports, the assault appeared to be sudden and without any declared motive. A witness, who spoke to a local newspaper, recounted that the suspect initially engaged in a dispute with several people on the street before commencing the stabbing spree. Efforts to deter the assailant were made, but the sight of the knife forced people to retreat.
During the chaos, 42-year-old Syrian citizen Aladdin Alhalabi, who works for Foodora, intervened by driving his vehicle into the suspect in an effort to stop him. This decisive action potentially saved further lives, and the police have commended Alhalabi for his quick-thinking intervention, which they believe prevented additional harm.
A comprehensive search was launched by the police to secure the area and ensure that the attacker was acting alone. Investigations confirmed that Ahmad J. acted independently. It was also revealed that he was in the process of seeking asylum in Austria, with his documentation in order. Authorities are probing whether the suspect shouted any religious slogans during the attack.
The incident has sparked a political uproar in Austria. Carinthia’s Governor, Peter Kaiser, condemned the act as an “unbelievable atrocity” and called for stringent consequences. Meanwhile, right-wing political factions have criticized the incident as a systemic failure and are advocating for stricter asylum policies.
Such violent incidents are rare in Austria, and this event has reignited discussions concerning the country’s current refugee policies. The police have urged the public to share any pertinent information directly with law enforcement and refrain from disseminating details on social media.
