Turkey has expressed its disappointment over the recent decision of the United Nations Security Council regarding the expansion of the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. In a statement issued by the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it was stated that once again Turkey’s approval was not sought by the Cypriot side, which goes against the agreed upon UN procedures. The statement further mentioned that activities of the UN Peacekeeping Force in the region of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus can only be conducted based on the good intentions of the Northern Cypriot authorities. Additionally, Turkey emphasized the necessity of establishing legal grounds and pledged to fully support the actions taken by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
Turkey also expressed regret that the recent decision of the UN Security Council refers to models of solutions that have become obsolete and are outside the agenda of possible resolutions. The Foreign Ministry clarified that a fair, lasting, and sustainable solution for Cyprus can only be sought based on the realities on the ground. Turkey demanded that the UN Security Council acknowledge the self-determination and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot people. In this context, Turkey reiterated its commitment not to allow any kind of coercion or intervention. This situation is introducing a new layer of complexity in the UN’s policy towards the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, drawing the attention of the global community.
