The United States has approved multibillion-dollar weapons sales to key Middle Eastern allies Saudi Arabia and Israel, signaling a major military commitment at a moment of heightened regional tensions with Iran.
Details of the Approvals
The State Department announced the approvals on Friday. The package includes:
- A $9 billion sale to Saudi Arabia for 730 Patriot missile defense systems.
- A $3.8 billion sale to Israel for 30 Apache AH-64E attack helicopters.
- An additional $1.8 billion sale to Israel for joint light tactical vehicles, bringing the total for Israel to $5.6 billion.
US Commitment to Regional Security
In a statement, the State Department emphasized the strategic rationale behind the sale to Israel. “The United States is committed to the security of Israel, and it is vital to US national interests to assist Israel to develop and maintain a strong and ready self-defence capability,” the department said, adding that the proposed sale is consistent with those objectives.
The US provides billions in military aid to Israel annually, though this particular transaction is structured as a direct sale.
Regional Context: Fragile Ceasefire and Military Buildup
The approvals come as the region navigates a fragile peace. Israel and Hamas agreed to a US-backed ceasefire in October, largely pausing two years of war in Gaza. The Trump administration has stated the ceasefire is now in a second phase focused on disarming Hamas.
However, tensions remain critically high elsewhere. The US has deployed a significant military contingent near Iranian waters. Last year, Israel conducted a major bombing campaign against nuclear and military sites inside Iran.
Gulf States Urge Caution
Saudi Arabia, while bolstering its defenses with the new Patriot missiles, has expressed caution regarding any potential attack on Iran. Gulf nations fear regional instability could jeopardize their reputations as secure business havens.
The Human Toll of Recent Conflict
The backdrop to these arms deals includes a devastating human cost from the recent Israel-Hamas war. According to an AFP tally, the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, resulted in 1,221 Israeli deaths, mostly civilians. Gaza’s health ministry reports that at least 71,667 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s subsequent military campaign.
These substantial arms sales underscore the Biden administration’s strategy of reinforcing key allies’ military capabilities as a deterrent, while diplomatic efforts continue to manage one of the world’s most volatile regions.
