Incident Occurs as US Carrier Group Heads to Gulf Region
A US F-35C fighter jet shot down an Iranian drone on Tuesday after it approached the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier in an “aggressive manner” in the Arabian Sea. The incident occurred as a US naval carrier group is en route to the Gulf region. A US military spokesperson stated the action was taken in self-defense to protect the carrier and its personnel.
Details of the Engagement and a Separate Maritime Incident
Captain Tim Hawkins, a spokesperson for US Central Command, explained that the drone was shot down approximately 800 kilometers from the Iranian coast. He stated the drone continued flying toward the warship despite US forces attempting de-escalation measures. In a separate incident, Hawkins confirmed that two armed Iranian boats and a drone approached the US-flagged oil tanker Stena Imperative at high speed, threatening to board and seize it. A US destroyer, with air support, intervened and escorted the tanker to safety.
Broader Context: Nuclear Talks and Military Posturing
The White House indicated that planned discussions between US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian officials remain scheduled “for now.” Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt reiterated that President Trump has multiple options, including the use of military force, on the table. This comes as Iran faces international pressure, particularly from the US, to reach a nuclear agreement following domestic unrest earlier this year. A senior Iranian naval official recently threatened to block the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil and gas transit point, in the event of a US attack.
