US and Iran Clash Over Nuclear Inspections in Fragile Peace Deal

US and Iran Clash Over Nuclear Inspections in Fragile Peace Deal

Conflicting Narratives Emerge on Key Provisions

President Donald Trump declared that Iran had agreed to unlimited international nuclear inspections, writing on social media that Tehran had consented to “highest level Nuclear inspections long into the future (Infinity!!!).” However, Iranian officials swiftly denied making any such concession. Ali Bahreini, Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, stated that the country’s nuclear program was not even discussed during the first round of negotiations in Switzerland, which concluded on Monday. He added that Iran had not agreed to invite International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors back to its damaged nuclear sites.

Strait of Hormuz and Financial Terms Disputed

The disagreement extends beyond nuclear oversight. The preliminary deal calls for Iran to allow free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz for 60 days, but Tehran has signaled it may later impose tolls or fees on shipping through the waterway, which typically handles one-fifth of global energy supplies. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, touring Gulf allies unsettled by the accord, insisted that Iran would not be permitted to charge transit fees as part of any final.

On the financial front, the framework outlines the unfreezing of Iranian assets held abroad and the creation of a $300-billion reconstruction fund. Trump claimed any released funds would be restricted to purchasing food and medical supplies from the United States. Ambassador Bahreini countered that Iran would independently decide how to spend its own money.

Domestic Pressure Mounts on Trump

The diplomatic wrangling comes as President Trump faces eroding domestic support for the conflict. A Reuters/Ipsos poll released Wednesday found that 35 percent of Americans now believe the U.S. is in a weaker position with Iran than before the war, compared to 23 percent who see a stronger position. In a largely symbolic but politically significant move, the Republican-controlled Senate voted 50-48 to pass a resolution directing the president to remove U.S. armed forces from hostilities under the War Powers Act. It marked the first time both chambers of Congress have approved such a measure.

Despite the setbacks, Trump struck an optimistic tone during a rally in Pennsylvania. “We’re getting along quite well,” he said of the negotiations. The administration also relaxed travel restrictions on Iran’s World Cup soccer team, allowing it to travel from Tijuana, Mexico, to Seattle two days before its next match.

Lebanon Ceasefire Tested by Violence

Israel’s parallel war against Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon remains a critical sticking point. While the peace framework requires Israeli troop withdrawal from Lebanon, Israeli officials maintain they will retain a security zone in the south. Even as Israeli and Lebanese delegations renewed talks in Washington on Tuesday, Israeli gunfire killed two people in southern Lebanon, according to civil defense and health ministry sources. Hezbollah accused Israel of violating a ceasefire that has largely held since Sunday.

The United Nations shipping agency reported it is working to evacuate approximately 11,000 seafarers stranded when Iran initially closed the strategic waterway. Oil prices fell more than one percent on Wednesday, extending weekly losses and trading near their lowest levels since before the war began. President Trump, meanwhile, called on the Justice Department to investigate oil companies for not lowering pump prices in line with declining crude costs.
