Khawaja Defends Pakistan’s Tariq Amid Chucking Controversy

Khawaja Defends Pakistan's Tariq Amid Chucking Controversy

Former Australian Batter Calls for Perspective Amid Bowling Action Scrutiny

Former Australian batter Usman Khawaja has publicly defended Pakistan spinner Usman Tariq following chucking allegations made by Australian all-rounder Cameron Green during the second T20I between Pakistan and Australia. The incident has reignited debate over Tariq’s unconventional bowling action, which has been officially cleared multiple times.

The Controversial Moment

The controversy erupted during the 11th over of Australia’s innings when Tariq delivered a fuller ball outside off-stump. Green attempted a sweep shot but ended up lofting a catch to point, departing for 35 runs off 20 balls. As he walked off, Green mimicked a throwing gesture toward the dugout, suggesting Tariq’s action was illegal.

Khawaja responded by sharing a journalist’s analysis on Instagram with a strong statement: “There aren’t many things worse than being called a ‘chucker’ in cricket. The stigma is real. The man is just doing his best and has been cleared twice. Let’s have some perspective and understanding and stop jumping to conclusions.”

History of Scrutiny and Clearance

This is not the first time Tariq’s action has faced examination:

  • Reported during both PSL 9 and PSL 10, with official clearance each time
  • Faced similar criticism while playing for Desert Vipers in ILT20 2025
  • Underwent ICC-accredited biomechanical testing over 24 deliveries last year
  • Received formal clearance from Pakistan’s testing facilities

Tariq’s Medical Explanation

The spinner has previously addressed concerns about his unique elbow structure. “There are two corners on my elbow which make it hard for me to straighten fully,” Tariq explained after earlier allegations. “I’ve undergone two official tests in Pakistan, and my action was cleared. I didn’t have to change anything because I know I’m not throwing.”

Broader Implications for Cricket

The incident highlights ongoing tensions around bowling action scrutiny in international cricket. While the ICC maintains strict protocols for suspect actions, on-field accusations from players remain controversial. Tariq’s case demonstrates how perceptions can persist despite official clearances, affecting players’ reputations even when they comply with regulations.

As the T20I series continues, the spotlight remains on bowling actions and the appropriate channels for raising concerns within the sport’s established framework.
