ISLAMABAD — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to make a four-day official visit to Russia beginning November 30, with talks set to centre on energy cooperation, expanded trade and a broad economic partnership, according to diplomatic sources.
The visit, if confirmed, would see the Pakistani premier hold high-level discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin covering political, diplomatic, trade and economic relations, as well as the regional situation and international issues of mutual interest.
Energy and Industry at the Heart of the Agenda
Discussions are expected to focus heavily on energy, including oil and gas supplies and the development of energy infrastructure. Russian cooperation in the rehabilitation and modernisation of Pakistan Steel Mills is also likely to feature, alongside investment, industrial development and joint economic projects.
Agriculture and food security are expected to be part of the conversation as both sides look to broaden a relationship long confined to limited sectors.
Business Forum to Draw 100 Pakistani Executives
A Pakistan-Russia Business Forum is expected to be held on the sidelines of the visit, with around 100 Pakistani business leaders and company representatives likely to take part.
The forum is intended to give firms from both countries a platform for business-to-business meetings aimed at building commercial partnerships, exploring joint investment and expanding trade.
- The Pakistani delegation is expected to include representatives from textiles, agriculture, food, pharmaceuticals, industrial products and energy.
- Both sides are expected to discuss ways to ease banking and financial transactions and improve trade payment mechanisms.
- Challenges facing business communities in the two countries are also on the agenda.
Regional Security and Afghanistan on the Table
Regional and international issues are expected to come under discussion, including the situation in Afghanistan, security and stability in South and Central Asia, and cooperation at international forums.
Diplomatic sources said a business forum and a sizable Pakistani business delegation had also been planned for an earlier prime ministerial visit that was subsequently postponed. Key elements of that programme are expected to be retained.
Students and St Petersburg on the Schedule
The prime minister is also likely to meet Pakistani students studying in Russia to discuss their experiences and concerns and to explore opportunities for greater academic cooperation.
A one-day visit to St Petersburg, Russia’s historic cultural capital, is also being considered as part of the programme.
Pakistan and Russia have expanded high-level diplomatic engagement and economic cooperation in recent years, with both countries seeking deeper ties in trade, energy, industrial development, education and regional connectivity.
The proposed visit is expected to give further impetus to bilateral relations. However, the final dates, the composition of the delegation and the detailed schedule of meetings have yet to be officially announced.
