Pakistan-Bangladesh Trade Surpasses $1 Billion Amid Strengthening Ties

Pakistan-Bangladesh Trade Surpasses $1 Billion Amid Strengthening Ties The trade…

The trade volume between Pakistan and Bangladesh has exceeded the $1 billion mark, reflecting a significant improvement in bilateral relations. This development was recently confirmed by Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to Pakistan, Mohammad Iqbal Hussain Khan. The envoy emphasized that both nations are eager to further enhance their cooperation, following a period of strained relations.

The diplomatic thaw comes in the wake of a change in leadership in Bangladesh. The ousting of the India-aligned former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has led to a more balanced approach in Dhaka’s foreign policy. Under the new leadership of Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, Bangladesh has expressed a willingness to foster closer ties with Pakistan.

During a recent dialogue with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Yunus highlighted the importance of resolving past issues to progress in mutual interests. This has set the stage for an improved bilateral relationship, with trade being a focal point of this renewed partnership.

In addition to the trade milestone, direct flights between the two countries are expected to commence soon, as announced by the Bangladeshi envoy. This move is aimed at bolstering business and tourism exchanges, with an emphasis on making travel between the two nations more accessible, including simplified online visa procedures for Pakistanis.

Bangladesh has shown a keen interest in Pakistani goods, with significant demand for cotton, sugar, rice, apparel, and fruits such as mangoes. Conversely, Pakistan stands to benefit from Bangladeshi exports, including pineapple, jute, pharmaceuticals, and garments. The high commissioner expressed optimism about the future, stating that there is vast potential for increased collaboration and trade.

In a notable development, Pakistan recently exported 26,000 metric tons of rice to Bangladesh, marking the first such consignment in nearly two decades. This historic shipment underscores the potential for further trade expansion between the two countries.

The positive momentum in Pakistan-Bangladesh relations signals a promising era of economic and diplomatic collaboration, with both nations poised to leverage their respective strengths for mutual benefit.
